The State Veterinarian is responsible for overall administration of the Animal Health division's operations and accomplishment of the division objectives and goals. Provides leadership to staff and acts as the division's primary liaison to industry groups, the Missouri Legislature and state, federal and international governmental agencies.

Oversees and administers the day-to-day operations of the division and its employees.
Administers the division's annual budget.
Serves as the primary liaison between the division and livestock producers; producer associations; other state, federal and international agencies; and members of the Missouri Legislature.
Directs the formulation of the division's regulations, policies and procedures.
Serves as the primary official regarding emergency actions involving livestock disease.
Works closely with USDA Veterinary Services on state/federal cooperative agreements involving disease control and eradication programs, animal identification programs and other issues.
Directly supervises district veterinarians and the managers of the following programs: Disease Control, Meat and Poultry Inspection, Animal Health Labs, Animal Control Facilities Act, and Poultry.
Performs related work as required.

Graduation from a four year college or university with no less than seven years' experience, immediately preceding appointment, in the animal industry.
Possess livestock production experience.
Been involved in regulatory veterinary medicine, or have practiced veterinary medicine.
Have a degree in animal science or related agriculture curriculum and be a licensed, accredited veterinarian in the State of Missouri.
A Masters in Public Health (MPH) preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of Missouri laws and regulations as well as the legislative and rulemaking processes.
Knowledge of disease control and eradication programs
Knowledge of administrative duties associated with directing the operation of a state agency
Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking
Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing an organization of comparable responsibilities and complexity
Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, review and evaluate the division's overall operations
Ability to supervise professional and paraprofessional staff directly and through others
Ability to analyze and solve problems in both short and long term situations
Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions
Ability to express concepts and technical information clearly and logically
Ability to write, understand, interpret, explain and enforce regulations and policies
Ability to be on-call and travel as necessary
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public
