Full-time, benefited position

The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Health, Springfield Diagnostic Laboratory, has a full-time position responsible for isolating and identifying pathogenic microorganisms that cause infectious diseases in livestock and poultry. The position will need a qualified applicant to detect bacteria, fungi and other microbes. The incumbent in this position must be domiciled in the Springfield Missouri area.

Job Description:

This position requires highly independent work using professional judgment and discretion. It provides consumer protection through enforcement of a comprehensive system of inspection laws and regulations. Develops and performs highly advanced, specialized tests for which there are established procedures and serves as the technical and scientific consultant for the microbiology section of the laboratory.

Examine physiological, morphological, and cultural characteristics, using microscope, to identify and classify microorganisms in animal specimens.

Isolate and make cultures of bacteria or other microorganisms in prescribed media, controlling moisture, aeration, temperature, and nutrition.

Performs a variety of standard chemical, serological or bacteriological analyses of infectious organisms from domesticated animals. Work requires the application of analytical procedures to determine the presence, absence or concentration of infectious organisms and the identification of micro-organisms.

Reviews, evaluates, and interprets test results. Provides technical assistance and consultation to MO Meat and Poultry Inspection Program staff in technical areas.

May provide technical advice and assistance to management and other laboratories. Position may require overnight travel within the state. Perform other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in a biological, physical, or chemical science, clinical laboratory science, or Medical Technology. Two or more years of professional experience at the level of a Public Health Laboratory Scientist preferred.

An individualized proficiency certification for Clinical Laboratory Technologists, issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Two or more years of professional experience at the level of a Public Health Laboratory Scientist preferred.
(Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in a biological or chemical science, or Medical Technology may substitute on a year-for-year basis the required experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year of experience.)
Preferred minimum of two (2) years experience in a Public Health Lab as a Scientist OR Three (3) years of professional experience in environmental health in one or more of the special qualifying areas listed below, including one (1) year which involved three or more areas; and graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major specialization (30 semester hours) in one or a combination of the following: animal science, food science, sanitary science or business management. (A Bachelor's degree in animal science, food science or business management from an accredited university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of general experience. Experience involving three or more of the special qualifying areas listed below may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the stated education.)
