Grain Inspector I

STARTING ANNUAL SALARY: $30,996.00
Full-time, benefited position
(Opportunity to earn a $5 per hour pay differential)


The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division, Grain Inspection Services Program has a full-time, benefited Grain Inspector I position located in St. Joseph, Missouri. Employees in this position earn a $5 per hour pay differential during hours worked at high speed shuttle loading facilities.

Job Description:
This is entry level work obtaining samples of grain and preparing samples for grading. Work is performed under close supervision from a higher level Grain Inspector or other designated superior. An employee in this class may inspect railcars, barges, trucks and/or other carriers to ensure proper condition for loading grain and free from leaks, odors, infestation, etc. Employee will obtain representative samples of grain utilizing procedures specified by the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS); prepare grain samples for grading by performing tests necessary to determine moisture content, test weight, dockage and presence of foreign material; perform specialized mycotoxin tests; calibrate equipment, grind samples, read results and enter readings on official certificates; observe and verify the weighing of barges and railcars by grain company employees; complete sample pan tickets and work records; maintain file samples of grain and dispose of when authorized; maintain clean work area and equipment and perform other related work as assigned. The employee must be able to adapt to and work in an environment that may include factors such as noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights and moving machinery. Employee must also be able to distinguish color and odor and establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, members of the grain trade and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications:
One or more years of agricultural related work experience involving farm labor, grain elevators, feed mills, crop production, grain/oil seed processing, or a closely related area; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Necessary Special Requirement:
Applicant must obtain FGIS and/or AMA sampling and technician licenses, as well as licenses to grade a minimum of two grains and/or commodities as assigned by management within six (6) months of hire date. All federal licensing requires applicant to successfully pass multiple written and practical exams, however training is provided. Applicant must also be willing to work varied work schedule, including occasional night and weekends and accept on-call duty as necessary.
