PUBLIC HEALTH LAB SCIENTIST

SALARY: STARTING ANNUAL SALARY: $39,000

The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Health, Springfield Laboratory has a full-time benefited position available located in Springfield, Missouri.
Job Description:
This is professional and technical scientific work for the Springfield Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory performing complex tests under general supervision. The person in this position will be responsible for performing serologic tests for the presence of antibodies or antigens to various disease agents, performing a variety of bacteriological examinations for the presence of disease agents or contaminants in clinical or other specimens such as serum, blood fecal and tissue samples. Some testing responsibilities will be ELISA, agar gel, tube hemagglutination-inhibition, complement fixation and plate testing. Additional duties would be preparing various media for the prescribed tests. Responsibilities include but not limited to: assuring the accuracy of tests through quality control procedures, record keeping, notifying appropriate scientific and supervisory staff when a test system is not functioning, consultation with appropriate authorities, implements and documents appropriate remedial and corrective action. The person in this position will participate in sample accessioning and recordkeeping to insure that all specimens are accounted for, appropriately handled and properly tested. Responsible for performing, recording and reviewing quality control results to determine the validity, accuracy or precision of tests performed and to ascertain the quality of reagents, chemicals or media used for analysis. Records and reports results in the proper manner for the technical area of analysis; checks reports for accuracy; and maintains confidentiality of reports. The person in this position must be able to communicate effectively and to prepare complete and concise reports. Perform other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in a biological or chemical science, or Medical Technology; and two or more years of professional experience as a chemist, microbiologist, medical technologist or Associate Public Health Laboratory Scientist; Or an individualized proficiency certification for Clinical Laboratory Technologists, issued by the US Department of Health and Human Services and two or more years of professional experience as a chemist, microbiologist, medical technologist or Associate Public Health Laboratory Scientist.
